Sketches plus some on-site notes , made while on location and during travels in and around Valpareaiso - the historic port of the Pacific in South America - now past its prime with the opening of the Panama Canal. . . can be pencil sketches or simple watercolour renderings - either on site or later in the studio.
They are not necessarily intended to become finished paintings . . . but sometimes do.
